23. Burri Burri - Whale Tales Sydney 2022

Burri Burri

Artist: Danielle Mate

Working on this sculpture as opposed to a flat canvas, the shape has certainly pushed me to think differently about placement, balance, scale and repetition. I have enjoyed working with form as opposed to a flat surface.

Meet the Artist

Danielle Mate

I have been given some incredible opportunities throughout my career as an artist, most notably now having an artwork in the private collection of Barack Obama. I have worked with some amazing brands such as Jaguar, Shell, Westfields, KARI & Go Foundation. Art is a magical tool and some of the most rewarding work I do is when I am facilitating workshops with young people on Dharawal Country, helping them make a connection with their culture.

Story of Place

Like Burri Burri, the story of King Street Wharf is a transformation story. Its Lime and Shelley Streets come from ancient shell middens created here by First Australians over thousands of years, and burned to create lime for mortar by colonial settlers. Once market wharves, then concrete hardstands for containers, now vibrant home to waterfront bars, restaurants, offices and apartments.

First Nations Audio Narrative: With thanks to our Indigenous Cultural Advisors, Aunty Jo Selfe and Uncle Graham Toomey, and special contributors who have generously shared  important stories of place. Listen to the First Nations Audio Narrative here.
