Story of Place

King Street Wharf now actually comprises nine wharves, occupying waterfront landing facilities first constructed in 1811 (Market Wharf), and extended on reclaimed land through the 1830’s with Patent Slip on Erskine Street, and Hunter River Steam Navigation Company Wharf on Margaret Street. Vessels of every description have moored here ever since, but today’s cargoes are likely canapes not coal!

First Nations Audio Narrative: With thanks to our Indigenous Cultural Advisors, Aunty Jo Selfe and Uncle Graham Toomey, and special contributors who have generously shared  important stories of place. Listen to the First Nations Audio Narrative here.
